ITJP’s Methodology for Verification of Individual Details
The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) has compiled a confirmed list of individuals who died between 16 July and 5 August 2024. This includes protestors, bystanders, law enforcement personnel, and individuals associated with the Awami League.
Sources of Information
ITJP relied primarily on two sources:
- Manabidhikar Sangskriti Foundation (MSF): Shortly after 5 August 2024, MSF conducted a nationwide survey using over 100 enumerators to collect data on deaths.
- Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (DGHS): The DGHS website published certified details of fatalities during the same period.
The ITJP cross-referenced and consolidated the MSF and DGHS lists, removing duplicates. While most deaths appeared in both lists, some were unique to either MSF or DGHS.
Verification Process
ITJP contacted the families of individuals on the combined list by phone. During these calls, it:
- Verified information from the MSF/DGHS sources.
- Collected additional details about the deceased person and the incident that resulted in the death including location and circumstances (as known by the family).
- Requested photographs and copies of death certificates.
Duplicate entries were identified and removed during this process.
Until July 25, 2025, ITJP has confirmed details relating to 885 deaths through direct contact with families. Attempts to reach the families of additional individuals listed by MSF and DGHS have not been successful thus far, and are marked as “unconfirmed”.
Additional Sources
- Police Personnel: ITJP obtained information on police fatalities from Bangladesh police headquarters.
- Awami League Members: The Awami League has provided ITJP with a list of 144 names of people whom it claims to have official positions within the party and were killed between 16 July and 5 August. We have been able to confirm X of these deaths, and the others remain marked as “unconfirmed”.
Photographs of deceased
While most photographs on this website were provided directly by families, some were sourced from MSF’s collection. Additional images were obtained from other sources, including a 10-volume report published by Jamaat-e-Islami which we matched with our confirmed cases.
